I have an hour counter on this site (it's actually just text). I think it's interesting to know how much time i've spent making this.
Why the hour counter?
When i finished the spr-project, i was really sad to not be able to tell how much time it took. i spent a considerable amount of time writing, editing, drawing, researching, and so on, and i have nowhere near an estimate of how much time i poured into that project. What's more, lots of my friends donated their time as well: giving me opinions on the artistic direction, overall aesthetic, going over grammar, helping figure out what worked and what didn't, and coding the whole thing for me. I had no way to account for that time either. I would have love to be able to say: this project took that many hours. If it had been paid-hours at X rate, it would have cost X amount of money. As someone that gives a lot of time to non-profit and also works in non-profit enviroment, this is something we like to do to visibilize unpaid work. It's a way to say: hey, this didn't happen because a few employees spend time on it, it happened because a lot of people gave a lot of their time, energy, knoledge, ressources.
We often hear discourse about how nobody would do anything if it wasn't paid labour. Anyone spending time on the indie web knows that's false. I felt that keeping track of how much time i gave to my site would be another sign against that.
Lastly, this is a sign for new commers and myself. My site is the result of work. It takes time. Growing skills, gathering and creating content, lines of code. It takes time. It took time. It took the number of hours i have on my counter.
This is a reminder: do not except your first attempt to look like this. Do not except my site to look like the site of someone that's been coding, gathering countent, writing, drawing for years.
This is a reminder: learning takes time. Nothing beats experience. Trial and error is an amazing way to learn. AI can suck my proverbial dick.
